For some genre theorists and audiences alike, locating a home category for a film is important and can lead to many diner coffees discussing whether, for example, Ex Machina is a noir film wearing a sci-fi costume or sci-fi film with noir notes. However one may fall on that question, binaries are definitely blended in this first film directed by Alex Garland, an author whose source materials are often utopias, dystopias, and the wisdom to not know the difference. Here, a lowly computer programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) at a Megatronic tech company is invited by the company's CEO (Oscar Isaac) to the latter's compound. There, he is asked to deliver a Turing test on a robot (Alicia Vikander) who might be looking to do more than just pass the test.
