This moving remake of the classic 1970s version solidified David Lowery as an effective mixer (and commentator on) sentimentalism and nostalgia — both through his films' material and their vibes. Here, the story many know well remains: An orphan boy lives in the woods with a dragon as his caregiver, until a forest ranger finds and adopts him. However, his newfound happiness is threatened by a man who wants to hunt down his magical friend.
